The RACE Strategy

Help Students Respond with Rigor Using the RACE Strategy

College- and career-ready standards, including the Common Core, expect even our youngest students to provide thoughtfully constructed responses when answering questions. By providing students with the right scaffolds, all students can successfully respond to text-dependent questions with rigor.

Aimee Blackwood, a 3rd grade teacher from Loomis Grammar, recently presented a breakout session on  the RACE strategy - a framework to support students when responding to text-dependent questions. This approach can be used with all grade levels across all subject areas.

What is RACE?

Simply put, it's a method used to help students thoroughly  answer a question with the following components:
R - RESTATE     A - ANSWER      C - CITE      E - EXPLAIN

Aimee was kind enough to allow us to record her presentation so that everyone can learn more about this approach.

After attending her session, some of our teachers have already begun using her approach in their classrooms. For example, Emily Dallosta created a Google Slide Template to help her 5th graders apply the strategy when writing essays. To make a copy of Emily's template, click here
